TOUR LEADER & MUSICAL DIRECTOR



Gary Smith has over 45 years experience working in music as a private educator, high school teacher, performer, composer, arranger and musical director.  He has directed many vocal ensembles and has toured Europe and Asia several times, performing with a number of a cappella groups and choirs.

 

In recent years he has led musical tours to Greece and New Zealand. For the Magnetic Island experience, Gary has created a high quality 8-day cultural experience that combines great natural scenery with fun and memorable workshops which will culminate in a performance on the last night of your stay on beautiful Magnetic Island.

A CAPPELLA GROUPS

Gary was a founding member and Musical Director of several successful small a cappella ensembles including Ninety Nine & a Half and The Fifth House.

​

With Ninety Nine and a Half he toured Europe and Sth East Asia taking in concerts for the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals.

 

His community choirs have performed at many festivals including the Blackheath Choir Festival, the Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival and the Tasmanian Festival of Voices.

TRAINING and CHOIR EXPERIENCE


Gary graduated from the NSW Conservatorium of Music as a high school music teacher having studied piano with Isador Goodman, music education with Richard Gill and Jazz Studies with Bob Bertles and Roger Frampton.

 

He sang bass with David Russell's St Mary's Cathedral Choir in Sydney and joined them on tour to Europe. He was a member of Richard Gill's Conservatorium Singers and The Singers of St Laurence with Neil McEwan.

 

Gary worked in NSW high schools since 1980 and directed community choirs in Sydney for 25 years.​​​​

Now a resident of Magnetic island, Gary has first hand experience of the treasures and culture of this magical place and can't wait to introduce you to it all while, at the same time, bringing everyone together in song.
